Copper Mountain Announces VantEdge Solution for Emerging Ethernet and ATM FTTx Architectures.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- New High Performance Forwarding Engine and OC-12c/STM-4 Module Enable High-Density FTTx Aggregation Solution

Copper Mountain Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMTN), a leading provider of intelligent broadband access solutions, today introduced a new version of its VantEdge access aggregation platform to meet the service demands of Fiber to the Node/Curb/Premises (FTTx) architectures.

Large carriers worldwide are re-architecting their broadband access networks to provide broadcast video and video-on-demand services, and to support other advanced, value-added applications such as gaming and Voice over IP (VoIP). For example, SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Communications recently announced that it may spend up to $6 billion over five years to deploy a FTTP/FTTN broadband network.

Many of these new carrier architectures will utilize multiple access technologies, including Passive Optical Network (PON (Passive Optical Network) An optical point-to-multipoint access network. There are no optical repeaters or other active devices in a PON, hence the name "passive. ) based fiber to the premises Fiber to the premises (FTTP) is a form of fiber-optic communication delivery in which an optical fiber is run directly onto the customers' premises. This contrasts with other fiber-optic communication delivery strategies such as fiber to the node (FTTN), fiber to the curb  (FTTP (Fiber To The Premises) The installation of optical fiber from the carrier directly into the home or office. Also called "fiber to the home" (FTTH). See PON and FTTC. See also FTP. ) and fiber to the neighborhood DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  node (FTTN (Fiber To The Neighborhood or Fiber To The Node) See FTTC. ) configurations. As such, the DSLAMs are situated close enough to residences and businesses to have sufficient bandwidth for multiple video streams to subscribers. To aggregate these DSLAMs and PON devices and to manage the traffic and subscriber sessions, carriers will require a low-cost, high-density aggregation platform in the telco central offices. Purpose-built for central office deployment and powered by the new System Control Module -- Advanced Processing (SCM-AP), the VantEdge meets these demanding requirements.

"We are seeing increasing interest by large carriers in FTTx network architectures," said Erik Keith, Broadband Infrastructure Senior Analyst at Current Analysis. "In order to fulfill the growing demand for both higher bandwidth and advanced services such as IP TV and Video on Demand (VoD), we estimate that carriers will invest a substantial amount of capital in aggregation devices for these networks in the coming years, and the winning platforms will offer very high performance, a broad range of ATM, Ethernet, IP and PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  features, and high reliability -- at very low cost."

Fifteen months in development, the new SCM-AP is built on the latest network processor technology from Intel(R), the Intel IXP (1) (Internet EXchange Processor) See IXA.

(2) (Internet eXchange Point) A public junction point on the Internet that provides an on-ramp to the Internet as well as a location for carriers to exchange traffic.
28xx series. The new forwarding engine is backward compatible with the existing VantEdge chassis and line modules, including Gigabit Ethernet, 100BaseT, OC-3c/STM1, DS3/E3, and T1/E1 interfaces. Recognizing that many carriers will continue to leverage their existing ATM infrastructures, the VantEdge now supports a 2-port OC-12c/STM-4 line module with built-in automatic protection switching and hot-pluggable transceivers. The VantEdge also includes features to accelerate the transition from ATM to Ethernet-based access technologies, which reduce the cost and increase the bandwidth in the access network.

"The carriers' new approach to FTTx architectures obsoletes traditional metro office and PoP-based BRAS approaches," said Mark Tiedeman, Vice President of Marketing for Copper Mountain. "The VantEdge was architected and cost-optimized for deployment at the outer edge of large carrier access networks. These enhancements to the VantEdge platform create a compelling, high performance and cost-effective edge aggregation solution for deployment in next generation FTTx networks."

The OC-12c/STM-4 line module is available now and the SCM-AP will be available in October 2004. For more information, contact your Copper Mountain sales representative or visit www.coppermountain.com.
