Fills Price/Performance Gap Between Legacy

Subscriber Management Devices and Edge Routers

) Package -- a subscriber management application for the field-proven VantEdge Access BRAS. The high performance VantEdge SMX package offers service providers more than a ten fold improvement in performance and active subscriber capacity compared to the most widely deployed subscriber management devices -- along with improved reliability, advanced features and comprehensive network management -- for a fraction of the cost of most edge routers.

Copper Mountain designed the VantEdge platform to cost-effectively address a range of networking applications. In the first such application, as an Access Broadband Remote Access Server A broadband remote access server (BRAS) routes traffic to and from the digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network.[1]  (BRAS), VantEdge has gained a great deal of momentum and is in trials with several large carriers worldwide. Subscriber management is the second major application targeted by the VantEdge and represents an attractive market opportunity given the large installed base of legacy subscriber management devices, many of which have reached -- or soon will reach -- capacity limitations.

"The introduction of the VantEdge SMX package is timely, as today's carriers are quickly running out of subscriber management capacity and they are finding no rational upgrade options from a price/performance standpoint," said Keith Higgins, Vice President of Marketing for Copper Mountain Networks. "Many subscriber management devices are being discontinued, and the 'upgrade paths' being offered by many vendors requires service providers to overspend o·ver·spend

on expensive, edge router-based devices that are much too large, complex and costly for the application at hand. The VantEdge is the ideal migration option."

Key features of the VantEdge SMX package include:

-- 10x performance improvement over most installed subscriber

management devices

-- Cost-effective upgrade path to increase active subscriber

management capacity

-- Carrier class reliability and redundancy

-- Advanced networking capabilities, including

auto-configuration, dynamic bandwidth on demand (BoD) and

Hierarchical Virtual Port Scheduling (HVPS HVPS High Voltage Power Supply
HVPS High Volume Precipitation Sampler
)

-- Comprehensive, integrated range of multi-layer QoS features

for advanced applications such as video, gaming and packet

voice

-- Native ATM switching and Traffic Management 4.1 support

-- Scalable network management with comprehensive graphical user

interface (GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface. )

-- Broad range of ATM, Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces

"We had simply outgrown our current subscriber management solution, and we needed a host of new networking features to deliver additional premium broadband services," said Hans Nilsson, President/CEO at Bruce Municipal Telephone System "The VantEdge is unique in offering a cost-effective, high performance, carrier class subscriber management solution plus a comprehensive suite of networking capabilities for advanced services in a single platform."

The VantEdge SMX package is available immediately. For more information, contact your Copper Mountain sales representative or visit www.coppermountain.com.
