In 1996, they developed their "BackRub" search engine, named after its unique page ranking method (explained below).  and Merriam-Webster toolbars.

Information technology specialist Copernic today announced that editors of the renowned PC Magazine have selected Copernic Agent Basic 6.0 as the best search toolbar in their Utility Guide 2003. More specifically, Copernic Agent Basic was recognized, along with the Google and Merriam-Webster toolbars, as the best "Search Toolbar" in the Browsers Utilities category, ahead of others competitors such as the Teoma (Ask Jeeves Noun 1. Since the first launch of this Internet desktop search software in October 1997, Copernic Agent, formerly known as Copernic 98/99/2000/2001, has received hundreds of awards and five star ratings throughout all continents. However, this 2003 nomination by PC Magazine is a very important event: this is the third time Copernic has received such an award from this influential and prestigious magazine. In 1998, the software received the Editors' Choice award for the "Best Search and Navigation Software" with a five star rating. In January 2001, it was selected as one of the "Best Software for 2001" category in PC Magazine's annual "Best Product Guide".

Commenting this prestigious recognition, Eric Bouchard, co-founder and Chief Software Architect at Copernic, declared: "The third nomination by PC Magazine is a concrete recognition of excellence for our flagship software, because once again the selection was made in an extremely competitive and innovative context where hundreds of products were considered."

"Copernic Agent begins where Web-based search engines end: it doesn't leave users with thousands of search results, but provides handy options such as filtering, grouping, summarizing, dead-link removal and tracking functions to assist users in their quest to find relevant information. Thanks to this intelligent search agent, users spend less time and energy searching the Web," continued Bouchard.
