Coors Encourages Positive Family Time and Community Service through Local Volunteering

GOLDEN, Colo. & LAS VEGAS -- Coors Brewing Company and MVParents today jointly announced that they will co-sponsor and participate in Points of Light Foundation's Family Volunteer Day, on Saturday, November 18. As part of this effort, Coors employees and their families will volunteer their time to strengthen the community and help make the Thanksgiving holiday more thankful with various activities in Denver and Las Vegas.

"Part of this Coors/MVParents sponsorship and our involvement with Family Volunteer Day is the opportunity to educate people about the need to reduce underage drinking," Bill Young, director of alcohol responsibility for Coors, said. "Through MVParents.com, parents receive information and tools to support their important role as the 'most valuable players' in their children's lives - so their children can thrive and make healthy choices," Young said.

He noted MVParents champions the 40 essential building blocks of healthy adolescent development identified through research conducted by Search Institute, an independent nonprofit organization recognized as a national leader in helping parents and community leaders understand what children and teenagers need in their lives to make positive choices. Community service and spending time together as a family are among these essential building blocks, Young said. Their research shows that the more Developmental Assets young people experience, the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors including underage drinking.

In addition, the Search Institute research has found that some categories of Developmental Assets have a particularly strong relationship to decreased alcohol use among adolescents. These include: boundaries; expectations; and constructive use of time.

Following are local volunteer activities Coors employees and their families will support on Family Volunteer Day.

* In Denver, volunteers will assemble and decorate food boxes for local needy families in an effort that benefits Family Tree, a local United Way organization, and the Mi Casa Resource Center for Women. Through this effort, 300 local families will have a holiday meal in time for Thanksgiving.

* In Las Vegas, The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada, Coors Brewing Company and several other organizations and corporations will join with Quannah McCall Elementary School, an at-risk school in a low-income area of the Clark County School District, to beautify the campus by painting a Dr. Seuss-themed mural at the entrance to the school library. Other nearby schools, Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School and Bridger Middle School, will join in the event by sponsoring graffiti removal in the neighborhood surrounding the three schools. Students from the schools and their families will volunteer along with Coors employees and partnering organization staff and volunteers to complete the project. As many as 300 volunteers are expected. That day, local agencies will also provide the community with information about becoming involved in prevention efforts that discourage high-risk behaviors in young people.

Now in its seventh year, Family Volunteer Day calls on families across America to work together in volunteer service to strengthen their families, communities, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations. The event draws thousands of individual families and families of corporations, as well as local agencies and volunteer centers across the country to provide service in communities. Celebrated the Saturday before Thanksgiving, this national day of service is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation.
