Cooper Union prepares for demolition.The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, accredited institution of higher education; in New York City; coeducational; chartered and opened in 1859. has begun preparations to demolish the Hewitt Building, at 41 Cooper Square Cooper Square is a junction of streets in Manhattan, New York City. It is at the confluence of the neighborhoods of The Bowery, the East Village and the Lower East Side. It is fed directly from the south by Bowery at East Fourth Street which becomes Third Avenue after Saint Mark's (Third Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets). The building will be deconstructed in phases with interior work beginning in mid-November, followed by exterior walls and building demolition in January 2007. F. J. Sciame Construction Co., Inc. is currently fencing off the site in preparation for the work. Upon complete demolition of the site, the college will construct a new state-of-the-art facility, New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of City's first "green" academic laboratory building. Ground breaking is anticipated in Spring 2007 Designed by 2005 Pritzker Prize winner, Thom Mayne, of Morphosis morphosis /mor·pho·sis/ (mor-fo´sis) the process of formation of a part or organ.morphot´ic mor·pho·sis n. pl. , the new nine-story academic building will be an environmentally sensitive and technologically sophisticated facility. It will house Cooper Union's Albert Nerken School of Engineering--ranked among the top three undergraduate engineering schools in the nation--and provide space for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Art and the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. The Cooper Union's project team for the building is composed of Morphosis Architects and architect Gruzen Samton LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol ; Construction Manager F.J. Sciame Construction Co., Inc.; and Horne Rose, Cooper Union's Owner's Representative. |
