Cool gig in every sense; REVIEWS IMELDA MAY Old Joint Stock Theatre.

Byline: WAYNE STACKHOUSE

PERHAPS the best pleasure in life is when something exceeds your expectations.

Not that I thought an Imelda May gig would fall short of being enjoyable.

I'd met this delightful young Irish singer who helps keep the rockabilly torch alive and seen her perform a couple of times before.

But the new burlesque style Imelda was a revelation and the intimate nature of the OJS OJS Organization Jointly Shared  venue did it true justice.

The old rockin' songs are still there, but she also mixes in superb blues and jazz-influenced numbers as well as original tracks from her new album.

Her superlative voice has never sounded better.

Imelda is the epitome of cool on stage, enjoying some gentle banter with the audience in between numbers.

She's been making some noise in the last year sharing the stage with the likes of Diana Ross, Bryan Ferry, Anastasia, Elton John and Jools Holland to name but a few.

Let's hope it's not long before she's weaving her charms again in Brum.
