Cool catheter: Device developed to control induced hypothermia precisely. (Application Ideas).

Neurosurgeons often use induced hypothermia to reduce tissue and organ damage during periods of ischemia (e.g. acute stroke and heart attack). conventional methods for cooling the body use cooling blankets and other exodermic treatments. These methods lack precise control of temperature and cooling rate. Innercool Therapies Inc, San Diego, CA, developed its celsius control System for cooling (& rewarming) the body intravenously through a catheter inserted into the inferior vena cava inferior vena cava
n. Abbr. IVC
A large vein formed by the union of the two common iliac veins that receives blood from the lower limbs and the pelvic and abdominal viscera and empties into the right atrium of the heart.
via the femoral vein femoral vein
n.
A vein that accompanies the femoral artery in the same sheath and becomes the external iliac vein.

A solution of any salt, usually an isotonic sodium chloride solution. Also called salt solution.

" segments that provide flexibility and durability so that the catheter may be guided to its location in the vascular system. Engineers used 3-D computer flow modeling to optimize the surface features of the heat exchanger to induce gentle mixing of the blood around the heat exchanger and enhance the transfer of energy. A proprietary alloy allows the system to operate over a temperature range from 0[degrees]C to 42[degrees]C while maintaining clinically important physical properties of catheter handling and guiding capabilities. Hemocompatibility is enhanced through the use of covalently bonded heparin.

As for the console, the engineers developed a closed-loop system that accurately controls the induction and maintenance of the hypothermia hypothermia

delivery. The company's well-tuned PID controller adapts to the patients' physiology to prevent any temperature overshoots while providing a very responsive system. A computer model was developed to simulate and predict a patient's temperature response from thermal inputs from an endovascular catheter under varying environmental situations. This model was then optimized to create the adaptive control algorithm
