BRITISH Food Fortnight starts tomorrow and there's nothing more British than roast beef with Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings.

We're thinking roast potatoes, mashed potatoes n. pl. 1. Potatoes which have been boiled and mashed to a pulpy consistency, usu. with sparing addition of milk, salt, butter, or other flavoring. It is a popular accompaniment to a meat course [U.S., 1900's], providing bulk and calories to a meal. , cabbage, turnip turnip, garden vegetable of the same genus of the family Cruciferae (mustard family) as the cabbage; native to Europe, where it has been long cultivated. The two principal kinds are the white (Brassica rapa) and the yellow (B. , carrots, broccoli - whatever your veg of preference!

You can cook this traditional meal using the freshest of ingredients during British Food Fortnight as most of them are pretty much in season.

The fortnight is a celebration of British food and there's a host of events lined up, including the Alnwick food festival taking place tomorrow and Sunday, as well as promotions and tastings, special menus in pubs and restaurants and highlighted British food on offer in our shops.

But back to the good old dish of roast beef. With so much veg in season to choose from it was hard to focus on just one but I have decided to go for the humble potato - our meals just wouldn't be the same without them!

Chipped, baked, roasted, mashed, sauted, boiled or in a salad, the potato is the king of veg by far!

There are hundreds of varieties of potatoes (about 700 I believe) but around seven main varieties that are grown in Britain.

Each is at its best at different times of the year but the main potato season starts in October.

The Duke of York

The title Duke of York is a title of nobility in the British peerage. Since the 15th century, it has, when granted, been usually given to the second son of the British monarch.
, however, is ready from September so you can get those now.

In the past I have always tried to avoid potatoes when I'm on a diet (which is most of the time) but I have found during my research that they actually contain less fat and fewer calories than rice or pasta and are also packed with vitamins and minerals and so are substantially better for you.

To accompany the good old potato in a roast dinner you have to have a good cut of beef Noun 1. cut of beef - cut of meat from beef cattle

chuck - the part of a forequarter from the neck to the ribs and including the shoulder blade

There are many local farm shops supplying the best of our region's beef. The one I go to (as it's not far from my office) is Wallington Farm Shop where they sell beef that has been born and raised within a five-mile radius on the Wallington estate.

It is always hung for 21 days before it goes on sale to ensure it tastes its best.

Other farm shops such as Blagdon, North Acomb in Stocksfield and Moorhouse at Stannington all sell delicious local beef, too, as well as smaller outlets such as Gibside Larder. Why not try cooking your Sunday dinner using all local ingredients this coming Sunday (or the one after, too) in celebration of British Food Fortnight.
