Cook turns up power; Record-breaking exploits giving Daniel a huge lift.

DANIEL Daniel, book of the Bible
Daniel, book of the Bible. It combines "court" tales, perhaps originating from the 6th cent. B.C., and a series of apocalyptic visions arising from the time of the Maccabean emergency (167–164 B.C.
COOK hopes to power his way to world glory after ending the year in record-breaking style.

The 16-year-old from Gateshead smashed British records in three out of the four powerlifting pow·er·lift·ing

Competing in the under-18, 67.5kg category, the Whickham School pupil's first lift was a squat of 181kg (a British record).

His second was a bench of 107.5kg (a British record) and a dead lift of 187.5kg which brought his total to 476kg (also setting a new British record).

His final dead lift of 200kg enabled him to break his own new best of 476kg in the same competition, bringing the current British record total weight to 488.5kg.

What makes Cook's recordbreaking all the more remarkable is the fact he only took up the sport 18 months ago.

Now the youngster, coached by former European champion and World Masters gold medallist Mick Hunnam at Gateshead Powerlifting Club, hopes to be part of the Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. He needs to lift a further 20 kilos to be eligible, but missed an opportunity to try for that weight at the weekend, pulling out of an event in Birmingham through illness.

Cook has already enjoyed success, winning the under-16 title at the British Championships in Dover earlier this year - and Hunnam predicts a big future for him in the sport.

He said: "When you think Daniel was competing in an under-18 event, to break these three records is a remarkable achievement.

"Daniel's attitude is terrific and his progress in such a short space of time has been outstanding.

"He has the potential to go all the way in the sport if he keeps working hard - he can be top class, no doubt about that."

Proud mum Glenda Cook said: "Daniel was delighted with his success. He has trained hard and balanced his commitment to the sport with his academic studies for four Alevels.

"His next ambition is to break the existing deadlift record and further his personal best and British record total score."
