Convergys Rating and Billing Application Module Helps to Support TETRA

Digital Communications Network for UK Emergency Services 

Convergys Corporation (NYSE:CVG), the global leader in integrated billing and customer care services, announced today that its rating and billing software, Geneva(TM), has been implemented and is in operation at Airwave mmO2 Limited (NYSE:OOM). The Airwave network provides a terrestrial trunked radio access (TETRA)-based nationwide mobile radio service designed to serve the needs of the regional police forces and other public safety organizations in the United Kingdom. The network provides high levels of availability and coverage with rapid call setup times and group calling at the push of a button, features that are essential to public safety organizations.

Convergys' Geneva active revenue management (ARM) software will be used to rate and bill the regional forces for various aspects of their network use. These include "interdivision" calls made across Airwave's TETRA network and "off" network calls using the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Geneva will also handle the billing for network initiation, subscription charges, products such as handsets, training videos, and technical support, and additional radio equipment rental and purchase.

Stephen Thomas, President of Convergys EMEA, commented that over the past two years, Convergys has established an excellent relationship with mmO2, which was part of British Telecom (BT) until late 2001. Geneva has already been implemented to handle rating and billing for Cellnet's GPRS services and for Genie. It is also in operation in a number of BT's fixed-line divisions. "Integration work, as well as the development of a number of specialized software components that mmO2 needed, was undertaken by Convergys staff supported by BT Exact, which has further strengthened our working relationship with mmO2."

Airwave mmO2's competitive bid process evaluated key criteria such as functionality, cost, procurement, technical, and security compliance. The Geneva software was selected because of its high degree of configurability with table-driven products and prices that are easily updated, allowing fast time-to-market and implementation. It also offers the benefits of a sophisticated yet user-friendly billing package and a single source for all customer data. In addition, features such as Geneva's modular product structure and its supported development roadmap provide mmO2 with the benefits of low ongoing cost of ownership.

The TETRA network stemmed from the national police radio system built on behalf of the U.K. government's Home Office, according to Tjarko Wieringa, CFO at Airwave mmO2. "By 2005, all 53 regional police forces in the United Kingdom will be linked to our TETRA network and enjoy the benefits of vastly improved local communications as well as better coordination of their operations.
