Convergent Networks Expands Cohesion Alliance Program to Bring Revenue-Generating SIP Applications to Service Providers.

Business/Technology Editors

SUPERCOMM 2002

LOWELL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 2002

Next-Generation Applications and Technology Partners Join Program to Enable Carriers to Enhance Revenues through New Service Opportunities

With a common goal of enabling today's communications carriers to enhance their residential and business offerings to include new IP-based services, eight leading applications and technology providers have joined Convergent Networks' Cohesion cohesion: see adhesion and cohesion.
Cohesion (physics)

The tendency of atoms or molecules to coalesce into extended condensed states. This tendency is practically universal.
Alliance Partner Program. New members include Acme (company, jargon) ACME - /ak'mee/ 1. A Company that Makes Everything. The canonical imaginary business. Possibly also derived from the word "acme" meaning "highest point".

2. A program for MS-DOS.
Packet, BroadSoft, Gallery IP Telephony The two-way transmission of voice over a packet-switched IP network, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The terms "IP telephony" and "voice over IP" (VoIP) are synonymous. , IPeria, Pingtel, SnowShore Networks, Sylantro Systems and VocalData.

Together, Convergent Networks and its partners are creating a migration path from today's legacy circuit-switches to an open, packet-based network architecture where new IP applications such as distributed call centers, hosted PBXs, voicemail, unified communications The real time redirection of a voice, text or e-mail message to the device closest to the intended recipient at any given time. For example, voice calls to desk phones could be routed to the user's cellphone when required. , custom calling services and multi-party conferencing See teleconferencing.  are readily deployed. Using Session Initiation Protocol (protocol) Session Initiation Protocol - (SIP) A very simple text-based application-layer control protocol. It creates, modifies, and terminates sessions with one or more participants. Such sessions include Internet telephony and multimedia conferences.

It is described in RFC 2543.
(SIP (1) (Session Initiation Protocol) An IP telephony signaling protocol developed by the IETF. Primarily used for voice over IP (VoIP) calls, SIP can also be used for video or any media type; for example, SIP has been used to set up multi-player Quake games. ) for applications interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components. , Convergent Networks and its Alliance Partners are enabling carriers to deliver next-generation converged services over IP, ATM and TDM networks A network that transmits data in dedicated end-to-end circuits comprising 64 Kbps digital channels. TDM networks evolved from the analog voice networks of the telephone companies. .

"Carriers want to deploy next-gen platforms, but need the revenue justification that advanced voice services will bring," said Deb Mielke, principal, Treillage Network Strategies. "Carriers are excited by the innovative services that are being deployed, and they are looking to these next-generation vendors to help deliver them. Convergent Networks and their Cohesion partners recognize the critical importance of vendor interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  in a successful network deployment."

Technological achievements and highlights of each partnership include:

About the Cohesion Alliance Partner Program

Convergent Networks formed the Cohesion Alliance Partner Program to further the education, development and deployment of next-generation packet technologies in carrier networks. Alliance members span all facets of the telecom industry and include technology providers, communications equipment manufacturers, applications developers and network consultants who help carriers successfully deploy traditional and advanced voice and data services over a packet infrastructure. The Cohesion Alliance Partner Program benefits include access to Convergent Networks' interoperability testing lab, participation in educational forums on next-generation solutions, such as the Cohesion product family, a forum to explore ideas with other partners in the Alliance Program, and the ability to leverage sales opportunities and co-marketing programs with Convergent Networks such as trade shows, seminars and industry speaking engagements.
