Convergent Networks Addresses RBOC Market Opportunity With OSMINE Services Support for TIRKS.

Business/Technology Editors

LOWELL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 18, 2001

Interoperability with the Telcordia TIRKS TIRKS Trunk Integrated Record Keeping System  Operations Support System

Provides for Inventory and Circuit Provisioning for the ICS (1) (Internet Connection Sharing) A Windows feature that enables two or more computers to share one Internet connection. First introduced in Windows 98 Second Edition, sharing is accomplished with network address translation (NAT), which is the common method. 2000

Broadband Switch in Large Carrier Networks

Convergent Networks, a leading provider of broadband voice infrastructure solutions, today extended the market opportunity for its next-generation broadband solutions to the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) by announcing an agreement for support of the Telcordia Technologies TIRKS system through the OSMINE (Operations Systems Modification of Intelligent Network Elements) A system from Telcordia for verifying compatibility with Telcordia-designed operating systems. (TM) Services process. By achieving interoperability between its ICS2000(TM) broadband switch and the Telcordia TIRKS system, Convergent Networks will have support for the network provisioning process for special service circuits, message trunks and carrier circuits. TIRKS will also provide inventory management of facilities and equipment.

"By seeking OSMINE-ready status for our ICS2000 broadband switch, Convergent Networks is demonstrating its strong commitment to ensuring that our carrier-class products are deployable in RBOC (Regional Bell Operating Company) The Bell telephone companies that were spun off of AT&T by court order in 1984 (the Divestiture). Also known as the "Baby Bells," the initial seven RBOCs were Nynex, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, Southwestern Bell, US West,  networks," stated Sally Bament, vice president, marketing, Convergent Networks. "The stability and scalability of our products are already being proven in competitive and incumbent carrier networks around the country. However, our next-generation switching solutions benefit all service providers by enabling the delivery of enhanced revenue-generating services. We are pleased to be working with Telcordia, the leader in OS systems, to ensure that our products meet the interoperability requirements of RBOC networks."

"The Telcordia operations support systems Operations Support Systems (also called Operational Support Systems or OSS) are computer systems used by telecommunications service providers. The term OSS most frequently describes "network systems" dealing with the telecom network itself, supporting processes such  are deployed across all RBOC networks, making OSMINE Services support a key product requirement to effectively utilizing network element features," said Dennis Tinley, Vice President, Operations Support Systems, Telcordia Technologies. "It is important to note that OSMINE is a continual process and is effective only when a vendor commits to update their interoperability with Telcordia. Convergent Networks has shown that they are committed to the OSMINE process and thus to ensuring that their switching platform is fully compatible with RBOC networks as well."

The ICS2000 broadband switch provides switching and interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  between traditional circuit-switched networks and next-generation broadband networks. Deployed today in more than a dozen carrier networks, including both competitive and incumbent local exchange carriers, the ICS2000 is a proven economical alternative to traditional circuit switch equipment for service providers seeking to deliver packet voice and integrated data services over a next-generation broadband network. Based on a high-capacity switching fabric, the ICS2000's architecture supports multiple broadband network technologies, such as TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission. , ATM, DSL DSL
