Convergent Group to Help Indiana County Build Digital Government; Taxpayers and County Employees Will Benefit From More Efficient Government and Lower Costs.

, Ind., have signed an agreement to bring the county new state-of-the-art digital services.

The purpose of the 14-month, $3.6 million contract is to bring Marion County's property tax and land records systems into the digital age. The project is jointly funded by several key agencies -- township assessors, county auditor, county treasurer, county assessor and county recorder County Recorder may mean any of the following, in the context of a county:
  • a recorder of deeds
  • a recorder of wildlife
 -- all of whom will share the project's cost.

. The new contract continues to build on a long-standing relationship among Convergent Group, Marion County and the City of Indianapolis, who have worked together on information technology (IT) projects dating back to 1988.

County officials believe the new project's benefits will improve customer service and employee productivity by reducing paper records required for business processes, help the county to comply with state mandates on property tax records, improve the generation of tax revenue, ensure citizens a fair, equitable and timely taxation process, increase interest earnings on county funds, reduce costs for records maintenance, and help expedite land development processes.

Convergent Group will replace the county's aging, mainframe-based PTAS technology with software supplied by Cole, Layer and Trumble (CLT CLT

With the new, digital system, all of the county's property tax billing and collection records and supporting data will be available online quickly and efficiently to county employees, who then can provide faster, more efficient service to citizens and businesses requesting tax data. "With the current system, citizens need to visit up to three offices to transact business or get basic tax information," Baxter said. "The new digital system will make property tax records available in a single stop."

The project is scheduled for completion by December 2001.
