Convera (Nasdaq:CNVR) customer Sandia National Laboratories last night was one of ten government agencies to be honored for innovative IT accomplishments at the 14th Annual Post NewsWeek Government Awards Gala.

Sandia, a U.S. Department of Energy, National Security Laboratory, was recognized for its pioneering work in the use of streaming video for online training and knowledge preservation.

Sandia performs a wide range of national security R&D work, including operating a training program for scientists, engineers and others tasked with designing, assembling and responding to incidents involving nuclear weapons. Several years ago Sandia began to videotape training exercises as well as conversations with many of their retired and soon-to-be-retired nuclear weapons engineers.

The goal was to create a video archive that would enable authorized personnel to review the training exercises and taped interviews in which their predecessors describe--in their own words--complex systems, technologies and solutions.

In order to provide fast, efficient access to the hundreds of hours of accumulated video footage, Sandia relies on Screening Room(R), Convera's video content management software, to digitize, index and manage their video archive.

With the Screening Room system in place, authorized users at Sandia and the Department of Energy can access the video archive from their own computers to search for and view relevant footage with the click of a mouse.

Previously, staff had to travel to a central videotape library, pull the tapes they hoped would contain the information they were looking for, then spend hours manually shuttling back and forth through the tapes.

According to Mike Krawczyk, a software engineer and principal advocate of Sandia's use of video for online training, "the main benefits of Screening Room have been reduced labor and improved access to our video-based information. In the past, you might want to see a section on thermonuclear explosions and have to search through 50 minutes of tape to find it. Now, information is provided much faster, with data delivery in seconds. We are also able to use the system in the field and view the segments on laptops for exercises--and we have 100 percent reliability with the text search."
