Conundrums and case studies in ostomy care.Case studies and conundrums was the title of the stomal therapy nurses' section national conference in Hanmer Springs last month. Education and sharing knowledge is vital to our clinical practice, so creating a relaxed environment in which to encourage participation and discussion about the different issues that arise with ostomy care and management was important. The opening speaker was Northland stomal therapy clinical nurse specialist (CNS) Marie Oldridge, who described how her rote has evolved over the years. To celebrate her 25 years as a stomal therapy nurse, she was awarded life membership of the section. Three delegates presented case studies for the first-time presenters' award. This was won by stomal therapy CNS from Palmerston North, Lawrence Mutale. His case study looked at a patient's journey pre- and post-cystectomy and the issues around managing an ileal conduit. Our second guest speaker was Middlemore Hospital colorectal nurse specialist/stomal therapy nurse Lorraine Andrews. Over the two days, Andrews presented three very interesting and relevant case studies, highlighting the complex management of stomas and wounds, necessitating the use of negative pressure dressings. The effectiveness of these dressings was well illustrated with photographs. These case studies encouraged the delegates to be creative with the ostomy products now available. Palmerston North committee member Maria Stapleton presented on a colorectal cancer patient journey. This newly developed pathway at MidCentral District Health Board captures the patient's continuum of care and ensures the patient is well informed and supported throughout their journey. The programme allowed for time to soak in the hot pools, to explore the forests and for entertainment by the Nelson Theatre Company. Report by stomal therapy nurses' section Sue Wolyncewicz |
