 about 11 a.m. today, it should be a controlled burn Prescribed or controlled burning (back burning) is a technique sometimes used in forest management, farming, prairie restoration or greenhouse gas abatement. Fire is a natural part of both forest and grassland ecology and controlled fire can be a tool for foresters.  intended to improve habitat for endangered plants as well as reduce the danger of fire in Howard Buford Recreation Area during the continuing dry season.

If weather conditions cooperate, the burn will be carried out on 15 acres of oak savannah Savannah, city, United States
Savannah, city (1990 pop. 137,560), seat of Chatham co., SE Ga., a port of entry on the Savannah River near its mouth; inc. 1789.
 - grassland with scattered Oregon White Oak - as well as 3.5 acres of low-lying prairie land where Bradshaw's Lomatium, a federally endangered plant, grows.

Both areas lie on the east side of the 2,400-acre recreation area, located off Seavey Loop Road southeast of Eugene.

The Lane Regional Air Pollution Control Authority will evaluate wind conditions this morning to determine whether the burn can go ahead safely.

The burn project will be conducted by the Lane County Parks Division and the state Department of Forestry, the Friends of Buford Park & Mount Pisgah, landscape ecologist Bart Johnson Barton Robert Johnson (born December 15, 1970, Hollywood, California), an American actor best known for his role as Coach Jack Bolton, father of the hero in High School Musical and High School Musical 2.  and University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  plant pathologist Bitty Roy.

The exercise also will be used to train firefighters and to permit an inventory of vegetation in the area.
