Control Data Announces Web-Enabled Email Sentinel to Patrol the Internet Front Line.

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 1999--Control Data Systems, Inc. today announced the release of eMail Sentinel, a high-volume messaging gatekeeper In an H.323 IP telephony or video environment, a gatekeeper is a device that manages domains and provides call control. It is used to translate user names into IP addresses, to authenticate users and to manage network resources.  that protects enterprise networks against virus-infected messages and spam attacks from the Internet, and provides organizations with a cleaner, safer email environment.

Built with Control Data's proven messaging and directory technology, the new message boundary application sits between the enterprise and the Internet to provide an unparalleled combination of email control services, message flow administration and enterprise security.

"The marketplace has been talking for some time about the need for a unified Internet guardian application, and Control Data is the first to put it together as a product," said Ron Rassner, vice president and chief analyst for Creative Networks, Inc.

eMail Sentinel provides a finely tuned set of backbone capabilities for large work group centered organizations. It also extends the capabilities provided by popular workgroup email vendors through a powerful directory engine that allows granular granular /gran·u·lar/ (gran´u-lar) made up of or marked by presence of granules or grains.

"eMail Sentinel dramatically extends the functionality of the traditional messaging switch A messaging hub that provides protocol conversion between several messaging systems. Examples of switches include Soft-Switch's EMX, HP's OpenMail and the earlier MAILbus from Digital.  with features that protect an organization's email infrastructure against unwanted intrusions," said David Folsom, President of Control Data's Enterprise Internet Solutions business.

Because eMail Sentinel includes a powerful embedded Inserted into. See embedded system.  directory and web-enabled administration and control, it allows IT administrators to easily enable or disable To turn off; deactivate. See disabled.  features on a user by user basis.

For example, eMail Sentinel's integrated message flow administration and enterprise security features are supported by virus protection with MACE, or Message Access Control Engine. As a message control system, MACE allows administrators to allocate and enforce a wide range of privileges for each user within an organization's email network.

Among many benefits, administrators can use eMail Sentinel's message control features to restrict the time that a user can send and receive messages, limit the possible recipients that a user can message, and also limit the originators from which a user can receive messages. Administrators also can defer the delivery and receipt of large messages, activate message cloning options, and perform virus scans virus scan Informatics A computer program that can ID code–geek speak for computer program subroutines–often found in computer viruses. eMail Sentinel also performs address rewriting for organizations by automatically routing messages from generic corporate name addresses to complex addresses within the organization. For example, individuals who want to send email to John Smith at Control Data need only to address their mail to john.smith@cdc.com, and eMail Sentinel will automatically route the mail to Smith's actual address of john.smith@security.apps.cdc.com. In addition to simplifying an organization's email addresses See Internet address.  for the benefit external audiences, this feature provides organizations with a consistent look.
