Contracts awarded for 1-93 widening.


The Executive Council has approved two contracts for the long-awaited expansion of Interstate 93 from the Massachusetts line The Massachusetts Line was a formation within the Continental Army. It comprised the Massachusetts quota of infantry regiments raised for general service which, together with similar contingents from other states, formed the Continental Line.  to Manchester.

The council approved a $22 million contract with SPS (Standby Power System) A UPS system that switches to battery backup upon detection of power failure. See UPS.

 New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The council also approved $6.9 million to build a bus terminal and maintenance and storage facility off Exit 5 in Londonderry. North Branch Construction Inc of Henniker was awarded the contract

Chuck O'Leary, commissioner of the state Department of Transportation, said those are the only two projects that can go forward now, until resolution of a federal lawsuit takes place.

The Conservation Law Foundation has sued to block the expansion, arguing the state did not consider mass transportation alternatives, including a railroad to alleviate the crowded roads headed in and out of Boston daily.
