Contract News: Boeing Co. said the Air Force has awarded the company a $138 million deal to build three additional Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite.
Global Positioning System (GPS)

Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use.
, or GPS, satellites. The satellites will be built at Boeing's Satellite Development Center in El Segundo El Segundo (ĕl sēgŭn`dō), industrial city (1990 pop. 15,223), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1917. Its products include navigation and computer systems, aircraft parts, office machines, telephone apparatus, and . The contract, called an option, falls under the military's Navstar GPS NAVSTAR GPS Navigational, Strategic, Tactical & Relay - Global Positioning System  joint program office. The first satellite in the constellation is supposed to be launched early next year.
