Contivo Awarded Patent for Semantic Integration Technology that Lowers EAI Project Costs by up to 60%.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Contivo, the leading provider of automated data integration solutions, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO PTO

Noun 1.
) has granted the company a patent for a critical technology that enables true semantic integration In Enterprise Application Integration, semantic integration is the process of using business semantics to automate the communication between computer systems. Semantics focuses on the meaning of data. . US Patent #6,757,739 protects the technology that enables semantics-driven association between data elements and is at the heart of the Contivo Vocabulary Management System (VMS (1) (Virtual Memory System) A multiuser, multitasking, virtual memory operating system for the VAX series from Digital. VMS applications run on any VAX from the MicroVAX to the largest unit. See OpenVMS. ). It empowers organizations to drastically reduce the time, efforts and costs incurred in data mapping Data mapping is the process of creating data element mappings between two distinct data models. Data mapping is used as a first step for a wide variety of data integration tasks including:
  • Data transformation or data mediation between a data source and a destination
across intra-enterprise (EAI (Enterprise Application Integration) Refers to various techniques used to share data and business processes in large enterprises. When companies acquire another organization, disparate information systems have to be made to work together. ) and inter-enterprise integrations (B2B (Business to Business) Refers to one business communicating with or selling to another. See B2B e-commerce, B2C and B2G.

B2B - business to business
).

Mapping of data elements from disparate enterprise applications forms the most time consuming and error-prone part of large integrations. More importantly, companies spend time and money on data mapping for every new integration effort. This lack of automation is a roadblock to delivering integrations on time and under-budget.

The patent awarded to Contivo addresses this specific pain area and allows users to automate the data mapping process using a "concept-synonym" methodology. Information represented by a particular field in a document is termed a "concept" and the relationship between the specific field in the document and its concept is termed a "synonym." This allows users to model documents by relating document locations to concepts, thus relating the semantics of the data once and re-using it for modeling related interfaces and for current and future integrations. It also enables auto-mapping between two application interfaces that can be further tweaked by the users. Additionally, the invention also provides ways for the user to "tweak" the mapping, analyze reports about what parts of large interfaces are applicable to specific situations, identify items that will be affected by an upgrade (impact analysis), and leverage the semantic understanding captured within the "concept-synonym" methodology.

"Contivo has been focused on delivering the most effective data mapping and integration solution to enterprises to optimize their integration implementations so they can save costs and reduce delivery times. This patent is a key accomplishment as we build stronger semantics-oriented features within Contivo VMS to automate the data integration process," said Dave Hollander, Chief Technology Officer of Contivo.

Contivo helps enterprises integrate data faster and more effectively than traditional hand-coded, manual methods. The Contivo Vocabulary Management Solution provides tools, infrastructure, and code generators that automate data transformation for application integration across multiple platforms Refers to two or more operating environments, which typically include the CPU family and operating system. For example, if versions of a program run on Windows and the Macintosh, the software is said to support multiple platforms. . Contivo's recently expanded capabilities and platform support enable data integration across the enterprise, extending to legacy systems and Web services.
