), a leading provider of voice-over-packet platform solutions for telecom equipment manufacturers, today announced the release of its upSuite(TM) High Availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  middleware as a stand-alone product.

The software, specifically designed for Voice over IP (VoIP) application developers, provides a quick, easy and seamless method for turning VoIP applications into Central Office products with 99.999 percent reliability. The core technology of upSuite implements IP disk mirroring at wireline speeds. Information created on an active processor is written to a local disk while simultaneously written across a TCP/IP TCP/IP

network to a standby processor and its local disk. IP disk writes can be implemented at speeds from 10Mbytes per second to as fast as 200Mbytes per second depending upon topology, while failover can be tuned to 500 milliseconds or less.

"upSuite enables VoIP applications such as click-to-dial, Web conferencing A videoconferencing session via the Internet. In order to interact with other participants, attendees use either a Web application or an application downloaded into their client machines.  or unified messaging to become a telco-grade revenue generator in weeks," said Ken Kalb, chief executive officer of Continuous Computing. "Our customers are building media gateways, media gateway controllers, billing, SS7 signaling, enhanced IP media services and OAM&P network elements with better time to market than they have ever had before. As a general rule, they deploy before their invoices are due."

upSuite consists of five easy-to-use modules that handle all of the low-level system calls for low-level IP I/O devices. The modules include:

1. upDisk(TM) -- a kernel-level virtual file system that provides

IP disk mirroring

2. upBeat(TM) -- tunable heartbeats with simple APIs to the

application

3. upRules(TM) -- a state table for maintaining raised and error

conditions for system maintenance and application-specific

events

4. upAgent(TM) -- an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  (Simple Network Management Protocol)

aggregator with a GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.

5. upState(TM) -- a library and API that allows applications to

checkpoint memory based data to a backup processor.

Currently running on SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill (TM) and Intel(R) versions of Solaris(TM), upSuite is immediately available with prices starting at $5,000 per node, with quantity discounts available.
