Continued education.Thank you so much, Heidi Schlumpf, for recognizing in The Examined Life ("Stop talking 'bout my generation," February) that what we learned from our loving catechists in the 1970s and '80s was valuable. But I always remind them of this fact: Something about the way they were taught worked. These people are still Catholic and want to know more--talk about a miracle. No one has ever told me they've stayed with the Catholic Church because they liked memorizing the Baltimore Catechism A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore (or, simply, the Baltimore Catechism) was the de facto standard Catholic school text in the United States from 1885 to the 1960s. . Thanks for your positive reminder. Margo Morin Hamilton, Mass. Perhaps the young lady in Schlumpf's The Examined Life burst into tears of compassion for those who failed to live the faith that they proclaimed she did not know. Loving God and neighbor is all well and good, but how is that love tested? It will be tested on judgment day when Christ says, "Come you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food" (Mt. 25: 34-36). The young lady had no reason to weep for herself. So let us not take on the task of judging, lest we be judged. Knowing the faith--and living it--can be two different things; and those who live it have no reason to be defensive of those who judge them as ignorant of their faith. It is the latter who are in peril. John R. Waldren Cincinnati, Ohio “Cincinnati” redirects here. For other uses, see Cincinnati (disambiguation).
