The real danger of the Y2K problem lies in a company's software and data files. Once the software or data is corrupted, systems and business procedures associated with that data could become inoperable. Continua's training program, which has now been adopted by the World Bank, is taught in multiple languages and reaches out to more than 120 countries, allowing business travelers to access expert help regardless of the time zone in which they are based.

Panel expert, Miklovic, agreed with O'Neill when commenting on the preparedness of SMEs. He added that the other problem is that businesses are connected via the Internet. "The Internet is a real double-edged sword. It's going to allow the propagation of data, which may be corrupt, from places that are not compliant," he added.

On an optimistic note, Banks said there is hope yet. "I think in September, common sense will prevail and people will realize there is a fix that's available (TimeBomb) that isn't a new equipment thing," said Banks. "We're already prepared and, with our sales force - that is growing by the day - we can approach and address this middle market that nobody seems to want to touch."

Continua also offers a simple hardware fix that's as easy as inserting the disk. The "TimeBomb" software program corrects Y2K hardware problems in a single computer or in a network.
