SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2000

Continental Savings Bank savings bank, financial institution that, until recently, performed only the following functions: receiving savings deposits of individuals, investing them, and providing a modest return to its depositors in the form of interest. , the largest independent, privately owned bank in the Northwest, will take a new name and make additional changes to become a full-service community bank in the markets where it now does business.

The new name -- HomeStreet(TM) Bank -- was announced last night to employees in Seattle, Portland and Honolulu. It will become official May 15 when new signs are installed at branches throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Hawaii. The new name and logo are meant to symbolize the 79-year-old financial institution's continuing commitment to home mortgage lending and community banking.

In making the announcement, Continental chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Richard S. Swanson said the new name "distinguishes us from competitors and better reflects what our bank is all about -- building communities, one house at a time, one street after another."

The name change kicks off what is expected to be a two-to-three-year conversion into a full-service, regional community bank. In many locations, this will mean bringing together separate mortgage lending and banking operations at a single financial service center. An improved Web site will soon extend the breadth of products and services available online. The conversion will include introducing new financial products and integrating mortgage, banking and insurance information systems.

Continental began in Seattle in 1921 as a commercial real estate lender, growing over time to offer home mortgages, construction financing, insurance and personal financial services.

The name change to HomeStreet, Swanson and Williams stressed, does not indicate a change of ownership, nor does it signal a change in Continental Savings Bank's signature: friendly, personal service, competitive rates, and community involvement. Market research surveys revealed those to be among the traits that Continental customers most highly value.

HomeStreet Bank, Williams confirmed, will continue to fund affordable housing and find "creative ways to support the public-spirited programs that make our communities more livable." The bank was again recognized in 1999 for its community programs with an "outstanding" rating from the FDIC FDIC
