Late last month, a majority of trial residential users in an area of the Detroit suburbs agreed to begin paying for the service, marking the launch of high-speed Internet access in the metropolitan area. Unlimited high-speed Internet access is available to Continental cable subscribers for a monthly fee of $49.95, and to non-cable subscribers for $59.95 per month. In early February, prior to the launch of marketing efforts, there were about 50 residential subscribers to Continental's service in the Detroit area. "As we further extend high-speed Internet access, we're finding that this is a product people really love," said Steven D. Hill, senior vice president of broadband data services for Media Group's domestic cable properties. "The success of our phased roll-out of these services is demonstrating that cable modems and high-speed Internet access are real, and in great demand among 'Net surfers."

Continental first introduced its high-speed Internet access service in September 1996 in metro Boston and Jacksonville. Through a gradual expansion of the service that is emphasizing product performance, reliability, and quality customer service, the company is now providing it to a total of nearly 2,500 customers in the three markets combined, with that number growing daily. In addition, thousands of students, educators, and administrators are utilizing high-speed Internet access and other sophisticated communication services through an interactive broadband network constructed and operated by Continental at Boston College Boston College, main campus at Chestnut Hill, Mass.; coeducational; Jesuit; est. and opened 1863.
