Continental Cablevision appoints regional telecommunications counsel.


BOSTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 1996-- Continental Cablevision has hired senior attorneys specializing in telecommunications regulatory issues for its Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and Western regions, the company announced today.

Responsibilities of the new counsel include developing regional business plans and regulatory strategies for entering new telecommunications markets, representing Continental before state legislatures and public utility commissions, advising senior corporate management on telecommunications issues and working as an integral part of a regional regulatory affairs team.

"As we enter new businesses, and as more or our regulatory activities shift to the state level, we need in-house expertise to guide us through complex telecommunications regulations," said Robert J. Sachs, senior vice president for corporate and legal affairs. "By recruiting experienced individuals with strong legal, legislative and regulatory backgrounds, we are hitting the ground running."

The need for additional regulatory resources has become evident as Continental begins its push beyond video into additional broadband services such as alternate access, telephony and high-speed access to the Internet. The company has won regulatory approval to enter the telephone business in California and Florida and recently applied for status as a Competitive Access Provider in New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E). ; it already provides alternate access services in Florida and Virginia and is part owner of Teleport Communications Group Teleport Communications Group (TCG) was the first Competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) in the U.S. First formed in 1985, it competed with the existing telephone companies to provide dial tone and related services in the largest U.S. markets. , an alternate access carrier providing service in several markets around the country. Donald L. Crosby has been appointed regulatory counsel for Continental's Southeast region, serving more than 740,000 subscribers in Virginia, Florida and Georgia. Crosby was formerly staff attorney, Committee on Utilities & Telecommunications, Florida House of Representatives The Florida House of Representatives, one of the two Chambers of the Florida Legislature, is composed of 120 members, each representing a district.

Brown has been appointed corporate counsel/director of state regulatory affairs for Continental's Western region, representing about 900,000 subscribers in California, Nevada, Idaho and Washington state. Brown was formerly with MCI Communications Corp., San Francisco, where he was senior attorney, regulatory and public policy group. His responsibilities included representing MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.
