Deadline for the Cave Canem Poetry Prize 2002 is quickly approaching. Cave Canem was founded in 1996 by award-winning poets Toi Toi (tō`ī), in the Bible, king of Hamath, father of Joram (3.) Derricotte and Cornelius Eady to promote the artistic development of emerging African-American poets. The contest is open to African-American poets and authors of chapbooks chapbook, one of the pamphlets formerly sold in Europe and America by itinerant agents, or "chapmen." Chapbooks were inexpensive—in England often costing only a penny—and, like the broadside, they were usually anonymous and undated. The texts were similar to those of current tabloid newspapers and therefore reveal much about the popular taste of the 16th, 17th, and 18th cent. and self-published books who have not been published by a professional press. Manuscripts should indude 50-75 poems on numbered, unbound pages, and include a cover letter. Submissions for the prize are being accepted until May 15, 2002, and the winner will be notified by September 15, 2002.

The winner will receive $500 cash, publication from Graywolf Press in 2003, and 50 copies of the published book. This year's judge is award-winning poet Kevin Young. There is no submission fee.
