Aquitards are parts of groundwater flow systems that help protect underlying aquifers from contamination because of the much lower permeability of aquitards. The authors of this study (variously affiliated with the U. of Waterloo in Canada and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey and Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in the US) explore how water utilities and their technical consultants can evaluate the susceptibility of aquifers to contamination and how aquitards help protect water supply wells and aquifers from contamination. Having conducted a review of the relevant literature, they report on the "state-of-the-science" of aquitard evaluation relevant to understanding and predicting chemical and microbial transport to underlying aquifers. A companion document discusses methodology and provides technical guidance: Contaminant Transport through Aquitards: Technical Guidance for Aquitard Assessment. Many reports formerly published by AWWA Research Foundation (Denver) are now published by IWA Publishing in the UK. Distributed in the US by Bookmasters.
