Contact languages; critical concepts in language studies; 5v.9780415403771 Contact languages; critical concepts in language studies; 5v. Ed. by John Holm and Susanne Michaelis. Routledge 2009 2520 pages $1390.00 Hardcover Critical concepts in linguistics PM7801 This five-volume set collects 105 key writings in the field of contact linguistics, from J. M. MagensE Grammar of the Creole language as used on the three Danish islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John in America, published in 1770, through Plag and SchrammEs 2006 paper Early creole syllable structure: A cross-linguistic survey of the earliest attested varieties of Saramaccan, Sranan, St. Kitts and Jamaican. The selections chosen by editors Holm (English linguistics, U. of Coimbra, Portugal) and Michaelis (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Germany) reflect their own background in the study of pidgins and creoles but do address other contact-induced processes such as intertwining, koineization, and indigenization. The editors include brief headnotes for each article that are intended to place it in context, highlight its importance, and assist the student or researcher in tracking recurrent issues. The articles are, for the most part, presented in chronological order, with the exception of several later studies that have been placed alongside 18th and 19th century articles in order to highlight particular issues of significance. Among the articles are a number of new translations. The fifth volume contains a comprehensive topical index. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
