Consumers look for convenience and ease.

Results of the 2007 National Meat Case Study confirm that consumers continue to look to their grocery store for convenience and ease in meal preparation. "From increases in on-pack communications and full-service full-serĀ·vice

trends and strategies to better appeal to consumers since 2002. Key findings in the poll of retailers from 48 metro markets in 34 states include:

* A major shift to case-ready packaging over in-store packaging--64% of packages were case-ready in 2007, versus less than 50% in the 2002 initial study.

* The "natural" label appeared on 29% of packages, up 7% from 2004. Chicken had the most packages with the "natural" claim, at 67%.

* Growth in value-added products is up across the board, with fresh pork at 23%, up 11 percentage points; turkey at 19%, up 5 points; and beef at 7%, up 3 points. Also, a zero-stock analysis showed more high-ticket meats had zero-stock positions than lower-priced items.

Retailers should make every effort to avoid zero stocks, which create a huge potential for lost sales.
