DANVILLE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2000

Consumers Illinois Water Company [Consumers] announced that its $500,000 tank rehabilitation project is fifty percent complete.

The three-million-gallon water storage standpipe standpipe, tank or pipe for holding water in an elevated position to create pressure in a water supply system. For a tall building, where the pressure from the mains at street level is insufficient to raise the water to the upper floors, water is pumped up to the , located on the 2300 block of North Vermilion vermilion, vivid red pigment of durable quality. It is a chemical compound of mercury and sulfur and is known as red sulfide of mercury; it was formerly obtained by grinding pure cinnabar but is now commonly prepared synthetically.  Street, is now back in service after being sandblasted and repainted. The Consumers logo remains to be painted on the exterior of the standpipe

The second half of the project involves draining, sandblasting Sandblasting or bead blasting[1] is a generic term for the process of smoothing, shaping and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speeds; the effect is similar to that of using sandpaper, but provides a more even finish  and repainting the 300,000-gallon elevated spheroid spheroid /sphe·roid/ (sfer´oid) a spherelike body.

tank, which is the taller water tower adjacent to the standpipe. While the spheroid is being painted, the standpipe will provide the north end of Danville with fire protection and pressure.

Although Consumers does not expect any problems related to this water tank maintenance, certain areas north of Winter Avenue may experience slightly lower than normal water pressures for brief periods of time during the project. The spheroid water tower is expected to be back in service by mid to late-November.

 both storage tanks.

In addition to sandblasting and repainting the insides and outsides of both tanks, Hanfland Painting Contractors will also be making structural modifications and improvements to both tanks, including new tank access hatches and tank drain modifications to improve future maintenance and inspection capabilities.

During the project, Consumers has utilized a tank "shroud" for the first time to minimize the possibility of dust or paint from leaving the work site. The enclosure, much like a large shower curtain, is held in place by an elaborate system of cables and pulleys. The shroud has been extremely effective in keeping dust and paint within the very small work area.
