Consumers Energy, Employees, Consumers Energy Foundation Contribute $3.9 Million to Nonprofit Groups for Third Straight Year.JACKSON, Mich. -- For the third straight year, nonprofit community organizations received contributions of $3.9 million in 2001 from Consumers Energy, the utility's employees, and the Consumers Energy Foundation. The record-tying 2001 number pushed the four-year contribution total to $15 million. In 2001, the Foundation launched a new diversity initiative, awarding grants totaling $82,500 to support scholarships and internships for minorities and women. Overall, the United Way was the largest single recipient. The utility's 8,700 employees and the Consumers Energy Foundation contributed $2.1 million to 60 local United Way agencies across Michigan. Consumers Energy and the Foundation made $2.6 million in charitable investments. The Foundation grants supported more than 1,000 projects in education, health care, social welfare, culture and the arts, community and civic activities, economic growth, and the environment. The Foundation's Volunteer Investment Program (VIP) awarded grants totaling $323,700 to 471 organizations on behalf of 723 employees and retirees. The VIP grants recognize outstanding volunteerism by employees and retirees. Of the VIP grant total, 42 percent -- $135,950 -- represented a doubling of grants for volunteers involved in groups and activities that help children and youth develop into healthy, responsible, productive, and happy adults. The doubling is part of Consumers Energy's ongoing commitment to America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth. The 2001 figure was 21 percent higher than in 2000, the first year for grants to be doubled. In 2001, the Matching Gifts program directed grants totaling $301,589 to 213 higher educational institutions, community foundations, and qualifying food banks.
