Consumer survey ranks top home software brands.SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1995--Odyssey's Homefront study, the largest in-depth, national survey tracking the home market for personal computers, reveals that only two software companies and a handful of software packages are known by the majority of consumers with computers at home. The Homefront survey is conducted every six months by San Francisco-based Odyssey Odyssey (ŏd`ĭsē): see Homer. Odyssey Homer’s long, narrative poem centered on Odysseus. [Gk. The survey is based on a random-digit-dial, computer-generated sample of 2,000 households that is representative of all U.S. households. Because of the importance of brands in the consumer technology market, the July 1995 Homefront survey studied the awareness levels and image ratings of software manufacturers/publishers and popular software packages and titles. Surprisingly, only two software companies had awareness levels of more than 50 percent among households with PCs: Microsoft and Lotus. The software packages with the highest levels of awareness in PC households, and the only ones known by more than 50 percent of PC households, were Quicken A popular financial management program for PCs and Macs from Intuit, Inc., Mountain View, CA (www.intuit.com).
