Information for the index is compiled and released on the last Tuesday of each month by the Conference Board, an , which had rebounded in March, fell in April. The Index now stands at 109.2 (1958=100), down from 116.9 in March. The Present Situation Index decreased from 167.5 to 155.6. The Expectations Index fell from 83.1 to 78.2. The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a representative sample of 5,000 U.S. households. Consumers rating current business conditions as "good" fell from 33.0 percent to 27.9 percent. Those rating conditions as "bad" increased from 10.8 percent to 13.3 percent. Consumers claiming jobs were "hard to get" rose from 12.6 percent to 14.2 percent. Those reporting jobs were plentiful plen·ti·ful adj. 1. Existing in great quantity or ample supply. 2. Income expectations were also less optimistic. Now, 22.1 percent of consumers anticipate a gain, down from 23.4 percent in March.
