Consumer Advocacy Coalition Praises House Repeal of Gross Receipts Tax; Wireless Consumers Will Press on for Full Repeal of Double Tax.

WASHINGTON -- On behalf of the more than 7 million Pennsylvania wireless users, consumer advocacy organization MyWireless.org thanks Rep. Mario Scavello and his colleagues in the House of Representatives for passing legislation to repeal the state's Gross Receipts Tax A gross receipts tax, sometimes referred to as a gross excise tax, is a tax on the total gross revenues of a company, regardless of their source. It is similar to a sales tax, but it is levied on the seller of goods or services rather than the consumer.  (GRT GRT Great

The GRT imposes a 5% tax on cell phone services, in addition to the state's 6% sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  and other federal and local taxes and fees.

"While the House repeal is a big 'win' for consumers, the battle is far from over. Wireless consumers will be making their voices heard to their Senators and Governor Rendell, urging them to join these pro-consumer efforts to roll back an unfair double tax on wireless."

Pennsylvania ranks 8th in the nation for high wireless taxes, with the aggregate level of taxes, fees and government mandates on residents' wireless bills reaching 20%. In December 2003, Pennsylvania policymakers loaded a 5% GRT on wireless carriers. Wireless users already pay a 6% state sales tax, plus other federal and local taxes and fees. That level of unfair and excessive taxation could make wireless service unaffordable un·af·ford·a·ble
