For this first annual event, a team of on-staff Sweet's architectural consultants nominated the submissions based on Sweet's GuideLines and the "ideal" Sweet's content. A total of 162 submissions were entered for the Sweet's Marketplace award. An independent panel of five judges from nationally recognized architectural firms like Heery International Heery International, Inc. is an architectural firm that was founded in 1952, and is currently headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Heery is a full service design, engineering, and construction management firm with over 1000 employees located in 30 offices across the United States and  and Thompson, Ventulett, Stainbeck & Associates received approximately 30 entries to review (5-6 in each category).

Manufacturers receiving an honorable mention for the Best in Sweet's category included National Gypsum gypsum (jĭp`səm), mineral composed of calcium sulfate (calcium, sulfur, and oxygen) with two molecules of water, CaSO4·2H2O. It is the most common sulfate mineral, occurring in many places in a variety of forms. , MM Systems, Guardian Industries and Draper.
