The medium-maximum security facility will be completed in September 1997 and will house 1,975 inmates. The Northeast Correctional Center will be located on a 112-acre site, adjacent to the Bowling Green Airport. The facility will be composed of 10 individual, two-story housing units with 100 cells per unit; a central services building; an administration building; a maintenance building; a power plant; and two recreational buildings. Each housing unit is star-shaped and divided into four quads. Each quad contains 24 or 26 cells organized around a dayroom. One central control area will supervise all cells and all four dayrooms. The new medium-maximum security prison will be constructed with poured-in-place concrete with a masonry exterior and metal roofs on a steel structural system. Alberici worked with the architect, Booker Associates of St. Louis, and the Department of Corrections to see that an unusual construction technique called "tunnel forming" was allowed in the bidding process for construction of the project. Tunnel forming is a technique that uses an integrated set of wall and ceiling/floor forms repetitively as concrete is poured, much like an on-site assembly line. The process saves time and money on building projects that have many rooms of similar size, such as prisons, hotels and housing complexes. Alberici also successfully used the tunnel forming technique for a fast-track immigrant housing project for the government of Israel. In addition to Gov. Carnahan, several other dignitaries will be on hand at the ground breaking ceremony Ground Breaking Ceremony is Himsa's first album.
