Construction projects: ranked by project cost.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest construction projects in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. A port of entry on the Pacific coast, with a fine harbor at San Pedro Bay, it is the second largest U.S. city in population and one of the largest in area. County account for $6.5 billion in cumulative value and cover 12.8 million square feet. Eleven new and renovated hospital facilities on the list account for a combined $3.2 billion, or half of the total construction value. The largest hospital project is the 1.5 million square-foot Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center replacement, which will be completed in March 2007. Two hospital projects that did not qualify for this year's list include City of Hope's $200 million Helford Clinical Research Hospital, which opened in July, and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, which will start construction on a new facility in the next few months. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's two projects on the list are the Eastside Extension of the Metro Gold Line, which is valued at $868.8 million and will be completed in 2009, and the Metro Orange Line Rapidway that runs across the San Fernando Valley. The line is scheduled for completion later this year. THE PACESETTER GOLD LINE EASTSIDE EXTENSION THE 6.5-mile, $868.8 million project started preliminary construction in July 2004 and is set for completion in 2009. The extension will connect Union Station and East Los Angeles, with eight stops planned along the route. Two stations will be underground along the 1.8-mile tunnel below First Street in Boyle Heights. Construction on that portion begins in October. Other costs for the project include 10 rail cars valued at $3 million each, bringing the total project value to $898.8 million. The extension has spurred construction along the route. Development firm McCormack Baron Salazar is working with the city of L.A.'s housing authority and Related Cos. to develop the $100 million Aliso Village housing project in Boyle Heights. Trammell Crow Residential has nearly completed the $66 million first phase of the 500-unit Alexan Savoy project at First and Alameda streets in the Little Tokyo section of downtown. Overall, the Metro Rail system will expand to serve 70 stations throughout the county when the project is completed. [GRAPHICS OMITTED]
