Construction industry in Dubai 'still way ahead'.

Dubai: Construction activity is likely to continue just as robustly in 2009 as before, due to lower construction costs and the need to continue with ongoing projects, industry experts said.

While many have been quick to jump on Dubai's slowdown, Greg Christofides, executive director at Arabtec said it needs to be put in perspective.

"We [Dubai] went through the biggest construction boom and ... the fastest delivery of projects the world has ever seen. We are slowing down from extreme speed so in comparison to most other nations, we'll still be way ahead," Christofides said during a discussion on market challenges in Dubai as part of the MEED Mega Projects three-day conference.

Christofides also said there are still economic reasons why this construction boom should continue as people still want to live, work and visit Dubai.

"Projects will continue in all sectors. Although there has been a big panic about funds and new projects may be delayed, there are a lot of ongoing projects which will complete and so we see a bright future," Christofides said.

Christofides said it was possible that Arabtec could be busier this year than last year, as just because values of construction have decreased it doesn't mean there will be less square metreage being constructed.

"We are busier now than six months ago. Clients who had a budget in 2007 couldn't afford to build in 2008, so they are starting to come back in the market with lower costs," Christofides added.
