Construction halted for death probe.

CONSTRUCTION on a residential building in Seef has been brought to a halt by the Labour Ministry yesterday pending an investigation of a work-site death.

Bangladeshi labourer Jamir Hossain Mohammed Mahmood died on Monday at around 2pm after falling from the building's eighth floor.

Labour Ministry's occupational safety section head Ali Abdulla Makki said work on the building, where safety regulations were found to be flouted, will be kept on hold until further notice.

"It seems the worker was trying to shift materials from the eighth floor using the hoist, when another worker switched it on without noticing him. This resulted in Mr Mahmood losing his balance and falling to his death."

Mr Makki said the other worker would be summoned by the Labour Ministry for questioning today.

"It is important that we question the worker who switched on the hoist to find out if it was a genuine mistake or if there was an issue between the two men."
