Construction companies: greater San Fernando Valley firms ranked by revenues in 2005.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THIS year, the Business Journal's list of construction companies includes firms with a range of specialties from commercial to residential, homebuilding to general contracting. Many of the construction companies that were active in the greater Valley or headquartered in the region also did a significant amount of work outside the area. The two largest construction companies on the Business Journal list, Bernards Bros. Construction and Oltmans Construction Co., each did the lion's share of their work outside the greater Valley area in 2005. The No. 1 spot was grabbed by Bernards Bros. based in San Fernando, with revenues of $378 million in 2005. General contractor Oltmans Construction in Thousand Oaks came in at No. 2 with 2005 revenues of $290 million. Oltmans was the most active construction company in the greater Valley with 911,000 square feet of construction completed in the area in 2005. The company is also the largest local construction company employer, with 115 employees. Glendale-based George C. Hopkins Construction Inc. came into the No. 3 position with $60.1 million in revenue, doubling its revenue compared to 2004. The company completed 12 Valley-area projects in 2005, totaling 406,000 square feet. PACESETTER BERNARDS BROS. CONSTRUCTION NO. 1 on this year's Business Journal list of construction companies is Bernards Bros. Construction with 2005 revenues of $378 million. San Fernando-based Bernards, founded in 1974 by Doug and Greg Bernards, specializes in general contracting. The company is ranked No. 118 in Engineering News Record's list of top 400 contractors in the nation. In 2005, the company completed 10 projects in the Valley totaling 512,000 square feet. Currently, Bernards' local projects include: Valencia Marriott, Valley Bomb Squad Facility, East Valley High School #3, East Valley, Middle School #l, Camarillo Library, Mountain Vista Elementary School, Columbia Elementary School, and Saugus Union School District in the Valley. Bernards employed 113 people in the greater Valley, compared to 92 employees in the area in 2004. Bernards specializes in the construction of education, entertainment, institutional and public works facilities. Its client roster includes such companies as Walt Disney Studios, Universal Studios, Circuit City, Target, Glendale Memorial Hospital, UCLA, and USC among many others. Bernards completed 24 projects nationwide totaling 1.2 million square feet in 2005.
