Construction Begins on Aker American Shipping's First Shuttle Tanker.

PHILADELPHIA -- Aker American Shipping Aker American Shipping (OSE: AKASA) is a Norwegian-American shipping and shipyard company and part of the Aker Group, with Aker ASA owning 53.4% of the company. The company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange and is headquartered in Oslo, Norway.  (Oslo:AKASA) representative Michelle Pinto started a plasma cutter today to officially begin production of the company's first shuttle tanker. When this vessel is completed, Aker American Shipping will become the first company in the United States to own a U.S. flag shuttle tanker for use in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico; an area within jurisdiction of the Jones Act.

This double hulled, environmentally friendly tanker, which will be fitted with additional equipment to increase maneuverability, can receive oil from Floating Production Storage and Offloading A Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO; also called a "unit" and a "system") is a type of floating tank system used by the offshore oil and gas industry and designed to take all of the oil or gas produced from a nearby platform (s), process it, and store  (FPSO FPSO Floating Production Storage and Off-loading (shipping & oil industry)

) vessels and transport it from deepwater areas without pipeline access to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

Aker American Shipping President, Rob Kurz stated, "This is a very significant milestone for Aker American Shipping. Upon completion, Aker American Shipping will lease the vessel to OSG OSG Open Scene Graph

Four product tankers have already been delivered and are part of Aker American Shipping's fleet.

When the current series of twelve tankers is completed in 2011, AKASA will own the most modern product tanker fleet in the United States; and it will be the first company in the United States to own shuttle tankers for use in deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
