Constellation Power Source Turns to LiveVault Corp.'s Real-Time Back-Up Technology to Protect Mission-Critical Data.

Power Company Adopts Continuous Backup and Storage Solution for

Microsoft Exchange Server Microsoft Exchange Server is a messaging and collaborative software product developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Microsoft Servers line of server products and is widely used by enterprises using Microsoft infrastructure solutions.

Constellation Power Source, which delivers customized energy solutions to wholesale customers across the country, has adopted LiveVault Corp.'s real-time back-up solution, LiveVault(TM) for Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , to protect data stored on the company's Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. Exchange Server is an Internet-compliant e-mail system that runs under Windows NT/2000 and Windows Server 2003. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox.  database. Email is the company's main form of communication with customers, partners and suppliers, and is considered a mission-critical component of the operation.

"Email is a critical tool for us; we take every precaution necessary to ensure that it is always available," said Steve Tucker, senior systems administrator of Constellation Power Source, in explaining how the company turned to LiveVault after it lost an entire mailbox A simulated mailbox in the computer that holds e-mail messages. Mailboxes are stored on disk as a file of messages, a database of messages or as an individual file for each message. The standard mailboxes are usually In, Out, Trash and Junk (Spam).  filled with important customer information. It took a full 24 hours to restore the data. "Our previous backup solution was problematic and did not provide us with a quick, easy way to retrieve lost data. LiveVault has made backup and retrieval 100 times easier and faster."

LiveVault is a continuous backup solution that backs up data in real time, with little or no human intervention. It backs up byte-level changes as they occur, ensuring that up-to-the-second data is available at all times. Lost data is easily retrieved via the Time/Slice Restore feature, which allows users to easily select from multiple historical file versions when restoring lost or corrupted data. These features, along with LiveVault's ability to create an on-line mirror image of his Exchange database, is what sold Tucker on the product, which serves as the main tool for protecting email communications for 300 employees of the Baltimore, Md.-based company.

While Tucker considered other solutions, he found they fell short. Specifically, he found that they focused more on providing fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

for either hardware or software but not both, and did not do an adequate job of backing up and restoring the open database files. LiveVault addressed all of those issues, and more, Tucker explained, again citing the Time/Slice Restore feature; the three-tier storage system, which includes a tape library as one of the components; and the byte-level replication technology which effectively backs up the Exchange database.

"LiveVault doesn't skip a beat," says Tucker, explaining that his architecture includes a LiveVault server which, in addition to maintaining a current on-line copy of the Exchange database, backs it up to tape every six hours. LiveVault also allows Tucker to schedule the protection of his data across the WAN to an on-line disaster recovery server four times daily. Locally, he employs a LiveVault replica server and takes it offline when he needs to restore files or to test applications on an exact image of the production server. "LiveVault is extremely flexible and gives me a great deal of control when adding multiple replica servers on the fly."

"Constellation Power Source is one example of the power of LiveVault and is indicative of our customer experiences," said John Butler John Butler may be:

"LiveVault brings backup into the online era, making it an invisible component of an organization's IT infrastructure and providing a reliable, sound mechanism for ensuring that mission-critical data will be up and running 24/7."
