Constella Group Employee Awarded 2006 Truman Award of Leadership and Innovation.


WASHINGTON -- The Society for International Development has awarded Constella Group employee, Nadia Carvalho, with the Truman Award of Leadership and Innovation by Young Professionals in International Development. The Society's Washington, D.C., chapter presented Carvalho the award at its 2006 annual conference on Feb. 14, 2006, at the George Washington University George Washington University, at Washington, D.C.; coeducational; chartered 1821 as Columbian College (one of the first nonsectarian colleges), opened 1822, became a university in 1873, renamed 1904.  Cafritz Conference Center, Washington Center is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Washington. Center was so named because it was at one point considered to be the centre of Jefferson County, although it is now significantly to the east. , D.C.

Carvalho is a regional manager for the Mekong(1) in the company's Futures Group business unit. She represents a young professional working in the field of international development and supports the company's POLICY Project, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development The United States Agency for International Development (or USAID) is the U.S. government organization responsible for most non-military foreign aid. The highly competitive Truman Award is presented to an individual between 18 and 30 who has spent time in a development-related working environment and who has demonstrated the strong characteristics of leadership, creativity and dedication. The Society for International Development affirmed that, "the selected winner will recognize international development as a means of service to those who are most in need, and will work toward sustainable, people-centered development initiatives."

The Society recognized Carvalho for her leadership and management skills, for demonstrating increased levels of responsibility on the Mekong portfolio within Futures Group, and for her commitment to international development. Since August 2004, Carvalho has quickly established herself as an essential part of the Mekong portfolio of the POLICY Project. Carvalho actively participates in all aspects of POLICY Project's management and operations in Vietnam, China, and the Mekong Region, including work with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN ASEAN: see Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

"The Mekong region is a fertile environment for the spread of HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. ," explained Carvalho. "Injecting drug use, mobility within and between countries, the sex industry, discrimination against vulnerable populations, and poverty in the region suggest the need to develop strategies that address multiple epidemics."

In addition to her work with Futures Group, Carvalho continues her interests in international development through support to a Nepalese orphanage and work with former colleagues in Nepal to establish a permanent and sustainable structure to give children at the orphanage the opportunity for economic gain and higher education.
