Conservatives are voted out in Spanish backlash to war in Iraq.


OPPOSITION Socialists scored a dramatic upset in Spain's general election yesterday, unseating once- favoured conservatives stung by charges they provoked the Madrid terror bombings by supporting the US-led war inIraq and made Spain a target for al-Qaida.

 Zapatero, who has pledged to bring home the 1,300 troops Spainhas stationed in Iraq when their tour of duty ends in July.

The Socialists declared victory with 96% of the votes counted after an election overshadowed by the Madrid rail bombings that killed 200 people and wounded 1,500.

According to the near-complete results the Socialists soar from 125 seats in the outgoing 350-seat legislature to 164 in the next one. The Popular Party would fall to 148 from 183.

Rodriguez Zapatero began his victory speech with a minute of silence for those killed in the terror attacks.

``Today voters have said they want a change of government,'' saidZapatero, of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party  There are various political parties using the name Socialist Workers' Party throughout the world. Socialist Workers' Parties include:
  • Brazil - Unified Socialist Workers' Party
  • Croatia - Socialist Workers Party
. The numbers will leave him short of a majority, which is 176 seats. They will have to seek help to form a government.

But it was still a spectacular win that capped four tumultuous days. The Socialists ruled Spain from 1982-1996.
