Conservation pioneer named Energy Engineer of the Year.


The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) has named Charles C. Copeland, P.E. the 2006 International Energy Engineer of the Year for his significant contributions to the field of energy engineering. Copeland will receive the award at the 2006 AEE Awards Banquet on Wednesday, September 13 in Washington, D.C. during the World Energy Engineering Congress.

Copeland, senior vice president and principal at Manhattan-based engineering firm Goldman Copeland Associates, has long been an advocate for energy conservation and efficiency in his 40-plus years of experience.  and used early computer modeling techniques to accurately project energy conservation opportunities in existing commercial buildings.

"It is an honor to receive this award," says Copeland. "With the growing specter of global warming adversely affecting generations to come, we all need to redouble our energy conservation efforts."

 Professional, Copeland's current projects include the Battery Park City Community Center (LEED platinum level), a sustainable residential project for Common Ground Community, designing multiple building cogeneration plants and developing strategies to reduce utility peak steam use.

Copeland has received many awards over the years. His recent accomplishments include: receiving the AEE-NY Chapter's 2005 Energy Engineer of the Year Award; receiving first place at the ASHRAE ASHRAE American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers  2005 Region 1 Technology Award; and designing the HVAC system at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. The firm recently completed worked with architects Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum or HOK is a major, international architecture, interiors, engineering, planning and consulting firm established in 1955. The firm is headquartered in St.  (HOK) to qualify the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island as a LEED certified Building.
