ConsenSys Software Announces Most Complete RapidPDM Solutions Available; Version 5 Expands Product Structure Capability, Supports NT and Windows 95.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1996--ConsenSys Software Corp. today announced a new software release, Version 5, of its ConsenSys Open and ConsenSys Complete RapidPDM (Product Development Management) systems.

Both products incorporate significant new features, including full product structure management, enhancements to the document management and workflow modules, and a graphical browser.

"We now offer the most complete RapidPDM solution available," said David Hurwitz David Hurwitz is a classical music writer, record reviewer, and percussionist. He has written reviews for High Fidelity, Fanfare, the website Classics Today (as founder and Executive Editor), and Amazon.com. , president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Our new release is based on our proven, successfully deployed prior versions, which have enabled highly engineered manufacturers such as semiconductor, communications equipment and medical device companies to drastically shorten the time it takes to bring products to market. We are very sensitive to the needs of our customers, and the enhancements in this release are based on their input."

Enhanced Products Are Easier to Use Than Ever

The new product structure manager incorporates a complete and fully integrated Bill of Material (BOM) management capability. The BOM manager allows users to determine material requirements and manufacturing processes for new and existing products.

Users can also change product structure information, compare different versions, and perform other product design and maintenance tasks. This product structure capability allows for even tighter integration with manufacturing resource planning Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) is defined by APICS as a method for the effective planning of all resources of a manufacturing company. Ideally, it addresses operational planning in units, financial planning in dollars, and has a simulation capability to answer  (MRP (Material Requirements Planning) An information system that determines what assemblies must be built and what materials must be procured in order to build a unit of equipment by a certain date. ) production BOMs.

The document management and workflow additions include version management enhancements, usability refinements to reduce training time even further and additional capabilities for integration with PC applications. A new graphical, object-oriented browser interface provides even easier navigation and quicker access to product and document information.

Rapid Configuration, Ease of Use

ConsenSys Software leads the market in delivering systems that are successfully installed and have demonstrated significant return on investment. ConsenSys Open and ConsenSys Complete are RapidPDM systems that employ a unique "configured, not customized" set-up method that speeds implementation time and reduces project risk.

Users can quickly and easily configure ConsenSys products to their unique terminology, data and workflow requirements via a simple "fill in the blank" process. As a result, typical installation time is one to three months. Traditional UNIX-based PDM (1) (Product Data Management) An information system used to manage the data for a product as it passes from engineering to manufacturing. The data includes plans, geometric models, CAD drawings, images, NC programs as well as all related project data, notes and  systems, which are custom built from tool kits, may take a year or more to install.

ConsenSys Open is designed for organizations that use Oracle as the standard database for a single client/server platform. Users can integrate ConsenSys Open with other client/server applications corporate-wide. ConsenSys Complete includes an embedded database (1) Database software that is included with an application rather than offered as a separate database management system (see DBMS). Tending to be compact and efficient, an embedded database generally includes fewer features than a full-blown DBMS.  and is designed for mid-sized companies who need a bundled solution.

Within ConsenSys Open, there are several tightly integrated modules that work together. The document and part management module tracks, catalogs, indexes, distributes, and archives both hard copy and digital drawings and documents. The new product structure manager views and edits item master and product structure information.

The workflow module manages the engineering release and change process and also tracks and reports performance. The data integration facility allows the user to import legacy data into ConsenSys systems and to automatically export approved changes to the MRP system.

Version 5 adds Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  and Windows 95 client support in addition to the current support for Windows 3.1, Mac, and Power Mac clients. ConsenSys products support most networks and servers including Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC.

NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients.

Popular e-mail systems supported by ConsenSys Software include cc:Mail, Microsoft Mail, GroupWise, and QuickMail. Interface utilities for MANMAN, Expandable Software MRP, and other MRP systems are also available.

Availability, Price, and RapidStart Services

ConsenSys Complete V5 is in beta test and will be available in fall, 1996. ConsenSys Open V5 for Oracle will be available 90 days later. Pricing for a typical ConsenSys Open 50 user license is approximately $50,000, or about $1,000 per user. ConsenSys Complete pricing is slightly lower.

ConsenSys Software also offers a RapidStart Pack that ensures a fast and successful implementation. The RapidStart Pack, coupled with appropriate Service Packs, incorporates everything the customer needs to get ConsenSys up and running, including a project management kit, configuration workbook, a user-tailored procedure manual, hotline support, on-site consulting and tutorial, and training.

ConsenSys Software Corp. will be demonstrating ConsenSys V5 in Boca Raton, Fla., this week at the CIMdata PDM '96 conference.

ConsenSys Software Corp., originally founded in 1991 as North Mountain Software, is a privately-held software developer headquartered in San Jose, Calif. The company provides RapidPDM systems to manufacturers operating in an environment of rapid product change.

ConsenSys Open supports the Oracle 7 database and ConsenSys Complete is packaged with an embedded database. Both systems streamline product life cycles by automating document control, engineering release and product change management throughout the manufacturing organization.

The systems help manufacturers achieve the benefits of concurrent engineering and lower the cost of ISO (1) See ISO speed.
