This event benefits women and children living in poverty in Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. .

Esperanza's micro-lending program in Latin American communities enables primarily mothers to borrow small amounts of money at a low interest rate to start or expand a small business. With income earned from these businesses, borrowers provide their children with necessities such as medical care, clothing, adequate food, education, and clean drinking water drinking water

supply of water available to animals for drinking supplied via nipples, in troughs, dams, ponds and larger natural water sources; an insufficient supply leads to dehydration; it can be the source of infection, e.g. leptospirosis, salmonellosis, or of poisoning, e.g.
. Esperanza also provides desperately needed vocational training and a clinic where borrowers and their families receive medical care.

Esperanza was founded in 1995 by former Seattle Mariner and current broadcaster David Valle and his wife Vicky with the commitment to improving life and giving hope to children in Latin America. The Valles first became concerned for these children when, as a young player, Dave played Winter League baseball in the Dominican Republic Dominican Republic (dəmĭn`ĭkən), republic (2005 est. pop. 8,950,000), 18,700 sq mi (48,442 sq km), West Indies, on the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola.
