Conoco (U.K) Limited, an affiliate of Conoco Inc. (NYSE NYSE

III natural gas development in the U.K. southern North Sea.

During tests, the 44/17a-6Y well in the Hawksley field offshore Lincolnshire, England, achieved a maximum flow rate of 148 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.

The well, which was drilled horizontally through Hawksley, encountered some 1,100 feet of net pay in the Carboniferous Westphalian formation. The Ensco 72 jack-up rig also discovered an additional reservoir zone. The find is being studied and implications for field reserves are under evaluation.

, chairman and managing director of Conoco (U.K.) Limited, said that bringing in the new well was a significant milestone in the CMS III development.

"It takes us that bit farther along the road to our goal of first natural gas production in the fourth quarter of this year, and the discovery of another zone in the Hawksley reservoir suggests at least a potential for some upside."

CMS III is the unitized development of five natural gas discoveries in the U.K. southern North Sea. Part of the Conoco-operated Caister Murdoch System, it is located some 75 miles northeast of the Lincolnshire coast The coast of Lincolnshire runs for more than 50 miles down the North Sea coast of eastern England, from the estuary of the Humber (which divides it from East Yorkshire) to the marshlands of the Wash, where it meets Norfolk. .

) of natural gas, (Conoco net some 256 BCF), is expected to cost approximately 207 million pounds sterling (about US $294 million). It received development consent from the British government in June 2001. Despite being large and relatively complex, it is still on track to begin flowing natural gas later this year.

Once the six-well drilling program is complete next year the Hawksley, McAdam, Murdoch K, Watt and Boulton H fields that constitute CMS III are expected to achieve peak production of 300 million standard cubic feet (mmscfd) of natural gas per day.
