The 105,000-deadweight-ton "Sentinel" will join Conoco's all double-hulled fleet that includes: five similar double-hulled tankers primarily used to transport crude oil from Venezuela and Mexico to Conoco's Lake Charles Lake Charles, city (1990 pop. 70,580), seat of Calcasieu parish, SW La.; inc. 1867. It is equipped with off-loading equipment compatible with the oil field in question. This normally consists of a taut hawser arrangement or dynamic positioning to maintain the position relative to  in the North Sea, and two, state-of-the-art deepwater drillships.

Like the other Conoco double-hulled vessels, the "Sentinel" was built by Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries at their Koje Island, Korea shipyard.

"It's a partnership that has created six double-hulled tankers, a unique shuttle tanker and two revolutionary deepwater drillships. All of these vessels have set new standards in technology, safety and environmental protection in their respective classes. And all of them were completed in this shipyard on or ahead of schedule and within budget."

Kem's wife, Judith Raines, christened the "Sentinel."

The "Sentinel" is a 105,000-deadweight-ton tanker with a crude oil capacity of 727,100 barrels. All cargo tanks and fuel tanks are double-hulled to provide added protection against spills in the event of a soft collision or grounding. The most advanced environmental protection devices also are built into the vessel, which include:

-- Low-emissions engines that comply with future domestic and

international emissions regulations;

-- Navigation-data recorders, similar to the "black box"

technology used on airliners;

-- Equipment to exchange ballast bal·last
